It is also one of the most widely recognized martial art forms, as it is very commonly included in television and movies, thereby making the public very aware of its presence in the world. There are many different pieces of equipment and accessories which are included in the combat sport of karate, and one of the most important of all are the karate belts. The different karate belts are dyed in varying colors, each color representing a different progression or skill level in the sport. The black belt is the highest belt color that one can attain, white being the lowest. The believed history behind the karate belts system is that the early martial artists began their training with a white belt and then as they began their training and continued practicing the sport it eventually became stained black after years of sweat, dirt and blood soaking into it.
